JACK LONDON: WRITER OF ADVENTURE During his lifetime, Jack London was the most popular and prolific writer in America. Readers idolized him. Unaware of his early struggles to become a published writer, they loved his action-packed stories with their vivid descriptions and psychological insights into human and animal behavior. American magazines published ninety-nine of his short stories and articles. London wrote twenty-one novels, nine non-fiction books, eighteen anthologies, and three plays. In addition to his Klondike gold rush stories and sea adventures, he wrote articles and books dealing with prison reform, alcoholism and radical economic and social theories. He was a war correspondent during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905). His most famous novels are The Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf, White Fang, Martin Eden, and The Iron Heel. London left an amazing literary legacy: golden nuggets awaiting a reader's discovery between the covers of his books. Martha Rhynes, a retired secondary school teacher, began her writing career by researching the lives of famous American authors, and writing brief biographies and analyses of their work for inclusion in literary encyclopedias. Her book-length biographies include I, Too Sing America: The Story of Langston Hughes; Gwendolyn Brooks, Poet from Chicago; Ralph Ellison, Author of Invisible Man. Her works of fiction include a young adult novel, The Secret of the Pack Rat's Nest, and a recently published historical romance, The War Bride that has a World War II setting. Rhynes is the mother of six adult children and many grandchildren. Her family operates a commercial cattle ranch in Oklahoma.
